Adult CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation)

Critical Clinical Priority: Immediate chest compressions double or triple a patient's chance of survival after sudden cardiac arrest.

Step-by-Step Life-Saving Action Sequence

1

Check scene safety, tap patient shoulders and loudly ask "Are you okay?".

2

Call Quick Safe Ambulance IMMEDIATELY on 0721 853 796 and place on speakerphone.

3

Place heel of one hand in the center of the chest, interlock other hand on top.

4

Push hard and fast: 100 to 120 compressions per minute at least 2 inches (5cm) deep.

5

Allow full chest recoil between compressions without removing hands.

6

Continue uninterrupted until the paramedic crew arrives with the defibrillator.

What You MUST Do

  • Push to the beat of "Stayin' Alive" (100-120 BPM)
  • Keep your arms straight and lock your elbows
  • Swap with another person every 2 minutes to prevent rescuer fatigue

What You MUST NEVER Do

  • Do not stop compressions for more than 10 seconds
  • Do not delay calling 0721 853 796 to check a pulse if untrained
  • Do not move the patient unless they are in direct immediate danger
